Biography:

When I first joined the local YMCA, I was thrown into the pool against my own will. I was 2 years old when my mom signed me up for swimming lessons without my consent - how traumatic. Turns out, I can swim just fine, and I grew up enjoying all of the athletic programs the YMCA had to offer. Eventually, my involvement in sports and athletics at a young age steered me towards a career path of health and exercise.

Eager to study the science behind our bodies, movement and incredible capabilities, I earned my B.S. in Kinesiology at UMass - Amherst. I volunteered at local hospitals and bio-mechanics labs, I worked with Division I athletes and coaches, and I found my own passion for outdoor sport climbing along the way. I obtained my CPT right after university; I knew that personal training was the perfect opportunity to combine my enthusiasm for athletics and fitness with my expertise.

I trained at Equinox Sports Club for 3 years before joining the Cambridge YMCA, specializing in injury rehab and elite athletic performance. I believe education is the most important training tool for any athlete with any goal. I’m passionate about teaching clients the fundamentals of bio-mechanics, so that they know how to incorporate functional movement into their every day lives, for the rest of their lives! Please say hello when I’m around, and reach out when you’re ready to start your next fitness journey!

Bachelor of Arts, Communications: Clark University

Certifications:

ACE Certified Health Coach

Biography:

My lifelong passion for dance led me to work in fitness. Growing up, I enjoyed sports, and was on dance and XC/track teams. I went to Clark University for a 5 year program, earning a B.A. in Communications and an M.B.A. in Marketing. Upon graduating in 2006, I moved to Boston for marketing work and joined the MIT Ballroom Dance Team. In 2011, I made a career switch and became a Zumba instructor, and then a A.F.A.A. Group Exercise Instructor. I call myself the ‘Boston Zumba Mermaid’ as I used to travel around the area teaching mainly Zumba and Aqua classes, but I am certified to teach everything ranging from Ballet Barre to Tabata Bootcamp!

I became an A.C.E. Certified Personal Trainer in 2014 and an A.C.E. Health Coach in 2018. Under A.C.E. I also earned Senior Fitness and Weight Management specialty certifications. While I work with people of all ages and skill levels, I hope to provide extra support for those in these special populations. Long term weight management and pain-free living are very important and my ultimate goal is to help people develop healthy habits that last a lifetime.

My favorite part of working at the Cambridge YMCA is that every day there is an opportunity to guide people from all walks of life toward a healthier and happier lifestyle. When working with clients, my objective is to listen and create customized plans to help them achieve their wellness goals. Please let me know what I can do to help you!

Maxwell Martin

Personal Trainer

Education:

Bachelor of Science, Exercise Science: University of Massachusetts – Boston

Certifications:

ACE Certified Personal Trainer

Biography:

I found a passion for fitness through my mother, who’s been a Personal Trainer and Massage Therapist for as long as I can remember. Seeing the joy she brings to others inspired me to follow a similar path. I graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Boston with a degree in Exercise Science and soon after became an ACE Certified Personal Trainer.

Before I went to college, I completed two years of service with AmeriCorps NCCC and City Year, two amazing community service organizations. While working with NCCC I was able to travel all around the country working for different organizations such as Habitat for Humanity in Louisiana and a Boys and Girls Club in Texas. My time with City Year was spent increasing the fluency and attendance of middle school students in New York City with the ultimate goal of decreasing the national high school drop out rate. While I was in school, I worked at a Physical Therapy clinic as a physical therapy aide, where I assisted the injury rehabilitation. My degree has allowed me to do and internship at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, assisting with studies regarding sarcopenia: the loss of muscle tissue associated with aging.

I have worked at a YMCA for almost 10 years. I was a summer camp counselor at the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard, and then moved my way here to Boston where I was a lifeguard at the Charlestown YMCA. I love the Y and its mission; I can see myself being a part of the Y for the rest of my life. I am excited to grow here in Cambridge and work with this awesome staff and this amazing community!

I strive to help people reach their health and fitness goals, no matter the age or fitness level. Two areas of focus for me are weight management and strength training. I currently teach a Beginner Bootcamp and Carved From Stone. Please feel free to stop and say hi when you see me walking around the fitness floor!
