Synopsis

Heidi Holland is a gifted art historian and feminist who we first meet at the end of the self-indulgent eighties. In the play, we travel with Heidi on her journey from the turbulent and idealistic sixties and through the jaded seventies to the self-awareness she eventually finds in the late eighties. Through The Heidi Chronicles, playwright Wendy Wasserstein gives insight to contemporary society about the role of women in America during three decades that were driven by the demand to support civil rights, equal rights and women's rights.

Wasserstein's vivid characters are full of humor and anecdotes, but underneath the dry wit lie very real issues. Without preaching to the audience, the play presents such issues as feminism, homosexuality, AIDS and single motherhood in an unpretentious and relatable fashion. Entertaining and honest, amusing and thought-provoking, The Heidi Chronicles tells the story of an incredible woman who is fearless and persistent as she moves through life. From the idealism of her adolescence to the reality of being a single woman in a man's world, through Heidi Holland Wasserstein provides an historical perspective on the choices women faced in the final decades of the 20th century in a story which still resonates for women and men today.
